The Highwayman - Billy 6LG

Longingly, I gazed out of my gleaming, glass casement, wishing for my lover to suddenly appear out of the coal-black sky. The deserted, overgrown moor was lit up by the moon, which was a ghostly galleon. Surrounded by gusty trees that were blowing gracefully in the breeze, I spied the road that he would ride.

Moments later, as I heard the tlot, tlot of the horse’s hooves, a calming, familiar rhythm danced into my ears; only my true love would sing this! As my eyes widened and sparkled, a handsome Highwayman, wearing a crimson, velvet coat, came galloping towards me. He reached out for my hand and told me his cunning plan: “I’ll be back with some fancy, yellow gold before sunrise.” I nodded as he galloped over the purple, moon-lit moor until he became out of sight to the west.

As The Highwayman trotted off, the old, murky stable wicket slowly creaked open and blood-red eyes glared suspiciously along the road where The Highwayman had ridden. I examined the never-ending, misty track and out of the thick layer of fog, a red-coat troop - King George’s soldiers - came marching to me. I was hoping that one of those figures (emerging from the mist) was The Highwayman. “I’ve been waiting all day!” I muttered, “From the early hours of the dawning to the rise of the moon and nothing!” I was furious.

As the wooden inn door creaked ajar, the red-coat troop came sneaking in. If The Highwayman comes back, he would be shot dead, wouldn’t he? I thought. “He’s innocent!” I told myself, as I silently slipped out of the shattered door: I was trying to get a better view. I spied them slurping down ale, unprofessionally. In a blink of an eye, they slammed down the transparent mug and came charging towards me. Cowering, I hid. They laid an eye on me so I slipped back into my room, bolting the door shut. “Open up!” a soldier bellowed, banging on the door until it broke. “Ey, where be The Highwayman then? ‘Ave ya seen ‘im anywhere?” I sat there speechless. Ferociously, they grabbed me by the neck and tied me against the leg of the bed with a musket for protection. Helplessly, I screamed as I saw The Highwayman come gracefully galloping back… Would this be the end?

As the ancient, wooden clock tower chimed midnight, I realised what I had to do - I had to sacrifice myself; I had to warn him with my death! With one last deep breath, a finger escaped onto the trigger of the musket. “Goodbye my precious love!” I bellowed as I pressed down the trigger. BANG! Faintly (as I saw everything slowly fade away) I caught sight of The Highwayman coming to a halt. My head was ringing. My mind was blurry. My eyes began to close but at least I had warned my love - warned him with my death...

The Highwayman

The moon glinted through my casement as I stared over the ribbon-like road, looking for the slightest move. I glared at the thin, moonlit road looking over it, patiently waiting for my love.

Suddenly, I heard the tlot-tlot ringing through my ears. “Could that be him?” I muttered to myself. A tune calmly whistled through my head, the tune only my lover would know. I opened my casement, below was The Highwayman: my lover. His golden pistol twinkled in the moonlight as we made a plan. “I shall be back with yellow gold before the morning light.”
He road away with his velvet coat waving behind him.

I didn’t see him in dawning; he didn’t come at noon. I glared eagerly out of my casement, but still nothing. I wanted to give up.

Soon later - when the sky was a tawny sunset - I saw something in the distance. My eyes squinted making a look on my face as they came closer and closer to the old inn door.

Suddenly, I heard a thump coming towards my room. The red-coats slammed the door open and stomped in front of me. They pushed me to my old, broken bedpost and tied me up to attention. “Why were they doing this?” I thought. I couldn’t move. The soldiers laughed and made fun of me, while staring carefully out of the window holding up their pistols.

Moments later, I heard a familiar sound of horse's hooves getting louder and louder. I twisted my hands to get free from the long, ichy rope. My hands were covered with sweat or blood - I didn’t know which. Suddenly, I manage to get one of my finger’s free. I made a plan. I took one last deep breath and…

BANG!

I laid in the darkness, drenched in my own red blood. My love galloped away safely - I’d warned him with my death.

The Highwayman - Sienna 6MS

Bess gazed up to the night sky and watched the jewels high above glisten elegantly. She sighed whilst plaiting a dark red love knot into her soft wavy hair. Feeling down-hearted, Bess slumped on her bed and closed her eyes.

Tlot-tlot,tlot-tlot,tlot-tlot. With joy Bess looked through her casement and out in the distance, she could see a familiar silhouette of a man galloping on his horse. As the silvery moonlight slithered onto the ribbon-like road, Bess’ eyes met the Highwayman’s. The horses hooves echoed through the night as the gusty trees madly shook their spindly branches.

Her eyes glistened with excitement as she opened her shutters to meet her true love. They stared shyly at each other for a while. Everything became slow whenever she saw the highwayman. After minutes that felt like hours, he finally found the courage to speak to Bess.
“My precious angel, I’m afraid that I will not be able to be with you on this fine night.”
Bess’ smile dimmed slightly.
“But i shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light.” He laughed a friendly laugh then he kissed her hand. As he galloped away to the west, Bess blew a kiss to the Highwayman too.

The Highwayman opening - Jude 6MS

Despite being old,I still feel the shame and guilt of my past. Every night, their ghostly faces haunt my restless sleep. My once love - Bess and her love and life: the ruthless, merciless highwayman. I look back and regret my move. The memory of her long, black, smooth hair drooping over her face still reminds me of herself unwantedly. Gnawing at me, guilt is too much to handle. I try to stop it but I can’t; the story is playing over and over in my mind. The inn once my favourite - now my least…

The Highwayman Opening - Rachel 6CP

The wardrobe stood high above Bess; it was collecting dust over the years. Her narrow bed was sitting in the corner of her slate-grey room. When she looked out of her casement, the wind howled on the shutters and she saw the gusty trees waving madly. High in the sky, the moon was hanging like a ghostly galleon. Lighting up the whole heather moor, Bess could see the road her love would ride upon.

Bess’ jet-black hair fell down her chest like a cascading waterfall. Her bleached-white teeth sparkled like pearls amongst her rose-red lips. She was a caring, young girl; her eyes were gleaming in the moonlight.

As the Highwayman came riding down the meandering road, Bess saw his coat of claret velvet swaying in the wind. His brown breeches were tucked into his knee-high boots. He’d a handful of lace at his chin and a french-cocked hat settled on his forehead. Up he came to Bess’ casement.

The Highwayman by Ollie 6CP

The sky was as dark as ash, despite the moon’s ghostly shadow. Early the trees swayed in perfect formation: they were dancing under the stars. The inn was tall and dark, and was lit by a glimpse of moonlight shining on the casement where Bess was waiting for her love.

The figure of the tall, handsome highwayman came galloping over the purple moor. His french-cocked hat flew off into the distant moonlight. As he arrived at the inn, he saw a silhouette standing at the casement. Was it his love? He whistled a tune to the window: it was his special call to get his loves attention. Bess - the landlord's beautiful daughter - came to the casement .

The long,black-haired beauty came down to the tall, blue eyed Highwayman. “One kiss my bonny sweetheart, I’m out for a prize tonight”. He turned to the west and sped away.

Tim was a mad man: he had eyes like fire and his hair stunk of a horse stable. The red coats trooped up to the heavy inn door. They drank the innkeepers ale. Fumbling up the crooked stairs they were heading for Bess’s room. Bess awoke with fear. Jumping out of bed, she tumbled towards the door’s lock but she was too late. The red coats tied Bess up with a heavy knot: she tried to wriggle free, but all the knots held good!

Cautiously, Bess tried to get into a silent rhythm of manoeuvring her hands but in a haste to get free she hesitated and her hands became sticky with a red river of blood. Confidently, she got her hand on the long, thin musket. She was in control of the trigger. Bess heard the highwayman.
“Tlot, tlot, tlot.” The Highwayman was here. The red-coats were ready with their  muskets but Bess pulled the trigger…

The highwayman came to a sudden stop.

He froze. The red-coats lowered their rifles and and stepped back; he turned his horse and fled away with fear not knowing who was shot!

Soar - A Setting Description by Joe 6CP

As its shining structure appeared beyond the horizon, the sun’s glowing fingers snatched out as passing clouds, rotating them into angelic swirls of cotton. The dirt path meandered around the mighty, majestic oak trees as the harmonious sound of crickets chirping rang out in the desolate park.

Mara - an addict to the designing of places - stood prepared for her next test flight. Unlike the previous twenty-seven days, Mara thought today would be the day: the day she finally had a working plane! Trees stared on nervously, rooted to their spots as she hurled the place through the air - it flew and flew - but then it plummeted towards the ground like a meteor homing in on its target.

Battle of Marathon by Daisy, 6CP

Nauseating piles of rotting corpses filled the battle field. The never-ending screams of the injured were continuously thrashing at my eardrums as we raised our blood stained swords in victory and relief. Fame was ours; Greece was ours. We couldn’t believe we were able to achieve this.

While we all stood nervously at the top of the hill, we took a deep breath in and watched the early morning sun slowly rise into the sky. My eyes quickly darted to the Persian army of 30,000, which was when I started to feel really nervous. We only had 11,000 men. I stared at my friend for a moment; he look confident and naive but I felt really nervous.

While we were still at the top of the hill, we got into our new phalanx formation. As I was getting into place, I started to doubt this new decision. Then we finally started to march down the steep hill over to the Persians awaiting us on the sandy battle field. We all came face to face, enemy to enemy. Battle had begun....

Battle cries were heard all across the bay as soldiers transformed their fear into anger. Showers of blood rained down on us as we slowly outnumbered the Persians. Countless bodies lay on the sand but there were more Persians yet. Many Persians came towards us feeling really confident the eventually lost their lives to our swords and spears. But they wouldn’t give up.

Revolting piles of Persian corpses were scattered all over the battlefield. The piercing screams of the injured or dying was all I could hear. The salty wind was bitter, but victory was sweet. Then I saw loads of soldiers dropping their armour in relief. Some even collapsed with their armour because they were so tired because they have been fighting in metal armour for a few hours which wasn’t easy.

Battle of Marathon by Luke, 6CP

Bodies with snapped necks and missing limbs, lay in puddles of their own internal fluids. Rivers of blood linked heaps of blooded corpses like vivid crimson paths. But it was over; the carnage was over. I glanced at the first Persian I killed, spear was still wedged in his blood stained stomach. Pain burned through my shoulder as I stood horrified by the massacre.

A glimpse of rising sunlight shone from the horizon, as the moon hung just above the mountains behind us. Rumours had been passed between the lines, that the spies had seen Datus load his cavalry back onto his boats and sail away. Tension hung in the air, as we anticipated the fierce battle ahead of us.

The morning light shimmered from behind general Miltiades, casting a dark shadow across his face as he yelled his speech to us. We began our march, and at arrow range, we broke into a run. I saw stunned faces as arrows rained down all around us.

I ran at a Persian and plunged my spear deep into his stomach. I was forced to leave my spear wedged where it was by an angry Persian charging at me. I spun whipping my sword from it's sheath, and catching him across the chest. The Persian collapsed, blood dripped down his front. I stopped for a moment to take a breath, but realised, that was a bad idea.

I clutched my shoulder in agony as an arrow whizzed between the gap in my armour. I went down, my head pounding. A puddle of blood leaked from my shoulder. I tasted blood, I must have bitten my lip as I hit the ground. And that was the last I remembered.

I came to myself with a familiar ringing in my ears and a distant pain in my shoulder was slowly growing. With my good arm I hoisted myself into a sitting position. “Aaagggghh!” I screeched as a strong gust of wind blew sand into my cut. I looked around and realised…

We had won!

Bodies with snapped necks and missing limbs lay in puddles of their own internal fluids.

Battle of Marathon by Max, 6CP

Shredded piles of sliced limbs filled the tributaries of blood and sweat, covering the fields that will never be the same again. Success flooded the bay where the Persians; equipped with broken swords, lay moaning and groaning with life threatening injuries. Glory was ours; Liberation was ours. The sacrifices of our soldiers will be remembered after we return to our homes.

A glimpse of rising sunlight shone from the mountains behind us as the fading moon fell into the undulating horizon. Morning sea-mist swept over the Persian troops - blinding them from us and us from them- but as the blazing sunlight rose to the peak of the sky, the sea-mist faded and we regained our line of sight.

“I am a strong soldier who usually fights for Miltiades on the edges of the phalanx.” Miltiades gave the order, “You on the phalanx now!” Confused, I did what he said. “Charge!” The whole army/phalanx sprinted into the action. A wave of arrows came flying down bouncing off of our shields like skimming stone on water.

Morning turned to night, light turned to dark as it seemed in my head as Persians dropped dead, blood spurted out of the dying men laying on the blood-soaked ground. The sound of metal clanging, burrowed into my ears partially deafening me. “Argh!” a sword welded to a Persian, dug into my arm causing me to leak blood out of my molded creating a red water feature.

Glory was ours; Liberation was ours. The sight of organs and body parts flooded my mind horrifying me and no doubt going to do again. I have killed so many people who may have had a loving family just like I do who will be waiting for their return but will have to face the horrible fact of their loved ones passing away.

Jaguar Trials, Sapphire Streak by Poppy, 6JH

The Trial Of The Sapphire Streak

The wind howled. The trees shivered in the bitterly cold weather. All the flowers collapsed, unable to stay upright. The clouds blocked the sunlight from breaking through. The wind made the waterfall move backwards and forwards, making it thunder dramatically against the pool of deep blue water below. The trees were being uprooted and one of them almost came crashing down . Fortunately, it was able to keep its balance.

Raphael decided that they all should sit down and wait for the storm to pass when suddenly, they heard a cracking noise. “It sounds like the cavern is going to collapse soon.” warned Yara, but they, obviously, couldn’t go outside because it could be dangerous. They huddled together to get warmer and not to get wet by the miserable rain.

Ben spotted a twinkle in the pool of water below them so he decided to go and investigate. “Yara, Raphael, I have seen a little twinkle in the water. Wait there. I am going to venture; it might be a clue.” He said Bravely as he nervously walked over to the opening. The water was calling him, so he dived in. A little piece of gold was stuck to the top of another cavern. There were stairs leading further down. He decided to go back up, take a big breath and call the others so they can explore together.

They entered the cavern and started tiptoeing down the stairs. The water had stopped so they could now breathe. When they were at the bottom of the cave, they heard a bang.“I...I...I...think the...d...d...d...doorway has closed.” stuttered Raphael. It was all dirty and mossy and ancient and loads of torches were strapped to the wall. Yara picked up the torch closest to her and suddenly, a wall opened up revealing something amazing. Something you have never seen before or even dreamed of seeing.

A great, big, pink crystal was sat on a stand brightening up the whole room. Ben grabbed it.The cavern started shaking. It was crumbling to pieces. “RUN!” shouted Yara, they ran for the other side of the cave. Water was bursting through. Streams of water were running down the stairs, catching up with them. They ran this way, that way until they came to a dead end…

“Lets search the walls for any buttons or something to push it open .” Rafael suggested. Yara found a glint of light through a crack and she told the others to pull it. They pulled with all their might and a rock comes tumbling down and it hits the ground. They could now feel the water running around their feet. “On the count of 3, pull...1...2...3...PULL!” Ben shouted as they heaved. Finally the wall came crashing down. Ben’s wound hurt a lot by then so they really needed to get some rest. At least they were free! The sun was setting and the sky was pink so they made up camp for the night in the jungle, underneath a tree.

“Ben...Ben,” Ben could hear someone whispering to him. Was it a dream? Then he had a sudden flashback, “The crystal… it’s...GONE!”...

The Poshest Heroes by Libby, 6MS

Upstairs, in the bedroom of Chestnut Mansion, sat two sisters and their dog Biscuit. Biscuit was chewing on the rug whilst the girls (Hope and Katie) were building a den. The doorbell rang. Katie heard footsteps from downstairs and felt the rumble of the elevator beneath her feet. Their den slowly started to crumble to the ground into a heap of blankets.
“Oh no, not again!” Hope whined, picking up a pink pillow.
Katie giggled as she watched Hope fail to rebuild the den. DING! The elevator doors edged open.
“Katie!” a girl yelled as she stepped out of the elevator.
Katie recognised that voice anywhere. It was her best friend Kelsie.

Once Kelsie had eventually gone home, Biscuit started to whimper continuously. The little pug scurried over to the peg with the long, spotty lead dangling off the end of it. He stood up on his hind legs and started to create a few faint scratch marks. Katie scrambled to her feet and made her way over to Biscuit. Quickly, she snatched the lead off the peg, forcing it to tumble to the ground. She didn’t even notice that she’d pulled the peg down so she just wandered away. They started to make their way down the five flights of stairs.
“UGH, it would have been so much easier to take the elevator, Katie.” Hope moaned.
Katie just rolled her eyes and walked away.

They arrived at Chestnut Gardens at 3:30pm for Biscuit’s group dog training session. This place was for the wealthiest of the wealthiest who live on Chestnut Street. Luckily, their mum and dad were extremely successful actors and actresses. Even better they got special VIP access to the best (and poshest) parts of the gardens. Once they even met David Cameron!

In the middle of the session a woman approached them. She had long, black hair scrunched up in a messy bun. She was also wearing the most peculiar outfit. It was a piece of artwork gone wrong, green, yellow, and pink all splattered into one ridiculous all-in-one.
“I need to see you two.” she ordered, in a soft tone.
Although it was a (kind of) soft and sweet tone, they were scared that something would happen to them if they didn’t go, they instantly followed her.

Soon after, they arrived outside of a tall, blue building with tiny blacked out windows dotted around. On the front door there was a sign that read: ‘keep out, or else.’
“Or else what?” Katie asked, feeling a slight shiver down her spine.
The lady just ignored Katie’s question and pushed open the door. As they entered the building, a memory flashed into Hope’s mind. It was of when they first moved into their old house, it looked identical to the inside of this place. She blinked and shook her head. She ignored and jogged over to the others.

Suddenly, the ground began to shake and the ceiling started to crumble.
“EARTHQUAKE!” Kate yelled, hugging Biscuit tighter than ever before.
The chandelier swung and the lights flickered. It fell to the floor with a loud SMASH which echoed around the room. Hope was screaming and crying, she thought she was going to die.
“Quick, use these!” the anxious woman yelled in desperation.
She handed them a mirror, taser and ruler.
“Why do I need a ruler?” Hope asked.
At this point there was deadly roar of thunder. As Katie was trying to get out of the door, she slipped and fell onto her back. Hope put out her hand to help Katie up. CRASH! BOOM! BANG! Down came a clump of the ceiling.
“You must go, NOW!” the lady yelled, a tear trickling down her face.
The two sisters burst out of the double doors, equipment at the ready.

A lightning bolt pierced through one of the blacked out windows, causing it to set alight. Heaps of people were evacuating the building. Another lightning bolt struck and caught Katie’s hand.
“OUCH!” Katie yelped, sparks flying out of her hand.
She fell to the ground.
“Katie?” Hope asked, her eyes watering.

Katie closed her eyes. Was she dead? Would Hope ever see her sister’s loving eyes again? Was this the end of their sisterhood…?

The Highwayman by Theo, 6JT

It was an unusually warm spring evening when a cart ,containing the love of his life, came rolling towards him. The robber was trotting towards the market in order to sell his recently obtained broach when Bess caught his eye .She was being burgled by a man nobody seemed to know. The highwayman yanked on the reins and galloped towards the mysterious man

By the time he got to the carriage the other robber had a bag full of riches but he soon dropped them when the Highwayman unslethed his rapier
“who are you?” asked Bess “ Another robber?”
“No” replied the Highwayman “Im William”
“Erm...i have lost my way” Bess continued “Could you show me back to the Golden Pint”
“Why of course”purred the Highwayman

The next hour was spent strolling towards the pub, when they got there The Highwayman dropped the question,
“Can i see you again”
“Tomorrow” answered Bess

The next 5 weeks were spent going to different pubs until Bess finally Bess asked
“What do you do for a living”
The HIghwayman didn't know what to say
“I work with money” he said causally
“specifically?” she said
“ I'm a Highwayman…” he murmured
WHAT” The noise made the whole inn stop talking
“You lied to me” she said as she stopped out

It had been 2 days since the highwayman had seen Bess and it had the two worst two days of his life of the highwayman's life. Filled with despair, he would wander aimlessly through the town

One day he wandered into the stable where he saw a man with mouldy hay-like hair and eyes they were hollows of madness. He was shoveling manure into a pot.

“What am i going to do?” squealed the Highwayman it appeared that Tim wasn't listening, but he hung on every word.
“I have got to find her”
As the highwayman raced out Tim started after him ; his trance was broken by a “Splat”

The Highwayman came riding round the bend and collided with Bess
What a coincidence.

The Highwayman got down on his knees and begged
“Please take me back my beloved”he wailed
A deathly silence...
“Meet me tomorrow” she replied

It was an unusually warm spring evening as a horse, carrying the love of Bess’s life came towards her.

Mazie and I by Charlie 6FT

Adrenalin flooded through my body. Mazie and I were grasping our parents' hands as the monster made its way towards the Safe House. “What’s going to happen to us, mother?” Asked Mazie. Mother didn't reply, she didn't want to tell her.
“Mazie, the monster is coming for us,” I shuddered as I spoke.

Suddenly, a large crash sent my heart flying. “Take Mazie away, Rihanna,” Mother whispered to me.
“What? Where are you going?” I didn't know why I asked. It was obvious, she and father were going to slay the beast and save our home. I grabbed my sister’s hand and led her to the train-station, we had to bail from this place.

We didn’t need to wait the weeks we did to receive the the letter. We knew mother and father had died; It wasn’t hard to figure it out. We had travelled to a new town, It was called Brookshire; it was a large town with not much in it. Brookshire was mostly grey, and made of mostly water.

We have been living in Brookshire for nearly a month now. Me and my sister were taking a walk when Mazie pointed to something. “No…” I said, my heart pounding louder than elephant footsteps. It was the beast that murdered mother and father. People started to panic; screaming blocked up my ears. Maize was petrified and started crying. I nearly cried too; I backed away with Mazie in my arms. People were shouting, “run for your life!” Others were calling family members, like children. Although I was seventeen, I didn't feel mature enough to make the right actions.

I chose to pick up Mazie and carry her to safety; this time I was the one to try and kill the monster.  I shall avenge my family. I didn’t tell Mazie what I was doing; she guessed anyway. “ No Rhianna! You’ll kill yourself! Who will take care of me then?” Mazie said aggressively. “Mazie” I said calmly. “I’ll be fine,” I said, with my hand on my heart.

It was a long walk back to the crowd of screaming townspeople. I pushed and shoved my way to the front. There it was, the black octopus creature. I took my pocket knife out and charged towards the killers neck. I stepped backwards, expecting a fight. I couldn't believe my eyes, I had killed the beast with that one stab. Was it its weak-spot? The sound of people cheering made me want to faint; I did. I could feel citizens gathering around me. I heard Mazie. I heard Mazie’s little voice.

A day later, I woke up in my bed. My little sister was sitting on a wooden stool asleep. “Mazie?” I said in a daze.
“Hi Rihanna!” Replied Mazie, in a tired voice.
“I think we should go back to our home-town.” I said, getting out of bed and packing our bags.
“Yes!” Mazie said, agreeing.

We walked to the train-station an hour later. Mazie was holding our money.”Whoops!” Mazie said, she had dropped our money in the train- tracks. Mazie jumped in, she didn’t see that a train was zooming towards the platform… “No!” I screamed

Christmas Memory by Archie 6FT

My favourite Christmas memory is when I awoke and discovered that my evergreen garden had transformed into a blanket of white. Paw prints had sunk into the snow while glimmering icicles dangled from my cedar window sill. I quickly gathered my belongings: a burgundy beany, a camouflage ski jacket, my comfy, yet warm, snow boots and rushed outside to see who had created this miracle. It was then when I explored and discovered that they weren't any ordinary footprints; they were ones of a magical, mysterious creature. A reindeer.

It reminded me that I may have some gifts from my family inside so I ran quickly but carefully back in to check. The sight was unimaginable; gifts (for me and my family) were piled up high next to my decorated Christmas tree. I knew that near the bottom of my parents gifts, were the ones which I had made, tree decorations that I had hand made and personalised especially for each of them.

Many hours had flown by because I could not defeat the urge to keep playing with my toys. Before I knew it, many loving members of my family had arrived and were ready to tuck in to a divine flavoursome Christmas dinner. Our mouth-watering dinner consisted of: luscious turkey; tasteful pigs in blankets and delectable roast potatoes.

I thoroughly enjoyed my Christmas day and I am sure the rest of my family did too. I was so exhausted so I brushed my teeth until they were squeaky clean, then I threw myself into my snug bed, prepared for another day of enjoyment to follow...
